It's a heartache.

I drew this picture a long time ago on my Windows 98, Ulla-Bella.

I miss that computer a lot.

Now not even my beloved XP is supported anymore. My computers are way too old to withstand any upgrades to 8.1. And I can't afford a new one, so how will I be able to work? Even if I could afford buying a new one I don't want to. I don't want an ugly computer with a glossy touchpad that has no proper buttons, whose screen is shiny and reflective, and is built out of fucking frosting and will break within a year. I don't want a computer that's not compatible with my documents or pictures. That looks like a disgusting, bland, clusterfuck rapechild between a smartphone and a Vista (yes, I am aware that it has two modes).

I want my 98 back. I want to be able to keep my computers the way they are without having them turn into safety-hazards. My XP:s are all great, and I'm used to working with them. I'm used to DOS. Why does the new "user friendly" generation of computers heve to replace the comfortable XP:s with a nauseating design that looks like it was made to entertain neglected infants? I hate it.

My laptop that I use for work and entertainment every day is about eight years old, and it's still working just fine for those purposes. I understand that I will have to cave in and get a new computer sooner or later, and I do want technology to progress. But it's moving in the very direction I think it shouldn't. Functionality is being replaced with (poor) design. Backwards-compatibility is replaced with inflexibility. On the computer I'm using to type this I have programs that were made in 1982. Can the 8.1 support those? I'd be surprised. I was thinking about going Apple, but it's not suitable for the kind of work I'm doing. I'd go with a Windows 7, but no store, neither online nor IRL, has it anymore. All new computers come with 8. Because it sucks so much that nobody would buy it unless it was the only thing availible, I suppose.

Looking back and remembering computers that didn't have colour-screens I can say we've come far. The technology keeps pushing forward, straight into oblivion. And it's dragging us all with it by our wallets. Let's hope for something better in the near future. Otherwise I'm going to stay with the XP. Or get a new 98.
